1. Introduction: What's your story?
Hi, I'm Nicole Griffin, founder and lead photographer at Nicole Griffin Photography, a luxury boudoir studio serving Washington DC, Baltimore, Maryland, and Northern Virginia.
Photography has been part of my life since high school, but I truly fell back in love with it after moving to Guam in 2015 and buying my first DSLR camera. What started as a way to share the island's beauty with family quickly turned into a passion for photographing people, places, wildlife, and stories around the world. I've photographed on every continent, including Antarctica, but it was boudoir photography that ultimately changed my life.
During the pandemic, I found myself rebuilding after a difficult breakup and working through years of criticism that had slowly become part of my own inner dialogue. Around that time, I discovered boudoir photography and was immediately drawn to its emotional depth. What I saw wasn't just beautiful imagery, I saw women being given the opportunity to see themselves differently. That realization led me to create Nicole Griffin Photography.
Today, my studio specializes in private, fully guided boudoir experiences designed for women who are often accomplished in every area of life except how they speak to themselves. Many of my clients are professionals, mothers, caregivers, entrepreneurs, and women navigating major life transitions. They arrive carrying years of self-doubt, comparison, body image struggles, or simply the exhaustion of putting everyone else first. Others just want to celebrate where they are at at this stage in their lives. My role is not to change my clients, it's to create an experience where they can finally see themselves clearly.
Nicole Griffin Photography has been recognized as a Coterie Noir Top Black Boudoir Photographer, an AIBP Best of Boudoir honoree, and a PPA International Photographic Competition two-time medalist. But the moments I'm most proud of don't come from awards, they happen when a client sees her images for the first time and realizes the version of herself she's been criticizing for years was beautiful all along. At the end of the day, my work isn't about how women look. It's about how they see themselves.
2. What is your experience shooting boudoir?
I've photographed women of all ages, sizes, races, professions, and backgrounds, but the thing that surprises me most is how similar their fears are. Whether she's 30 or 60, a bride or a grandmother, a CEO or a stay-at-home mom, most women walk into the studio wondering some version of, "Can someone like me really do this?"
After years of photographing boudoir, I've learned that posing is the easy part. Building trust is the real work. My experience has taught me how to guide women through nerves, self-doubt, privacy concerns, body image struggles, and even religious or cultural concerns while still creating photographs that feel authentic to who they are.
That's why I approach boudoir as a collaboration, and every session includes your unique personality, not just a cookie cutter version of the session. Every woman deserves images that look like her, not a version of her filtered through someone else's definition of beauty.
3. Where will the photo shoot take place?
Sessions take place in my private Baltimore, Maryland boudoir studio, which serves clients throughout Washington DC, Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the East Coast. The studio is appointment-only, with just one client scheduled per day to ensure privacy, comfort, and a relaxed experience.
The space is designed specifically for boudoir photography and includes multiple shooting areas, luxury furnishings, and a variety of sets ranging from classic bedroom-inspired scenes to more editorial and artistic looks. Professional hair and makeup are completed on-site before your session begins, allowing you to settle in and enjoy the full experience from start to finish.
Many clients travel from Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland, and throughout the East Coast because they value the private studio environment, fully guided posing, and same-day image reveal that are part of every session.
4. How should customers prepare for the Boudoir photo shoot?
Preparation starts well before your session day. Every client receives a planning consultation where we discuss wardrobe, goals for the session, favorite features, concerns, and the overall look you're hoping to create. You'll also receive guidance on what to wear, what to avoid wearing the morning of your session, and how to prepare your skin and hair.
In the days leading up to your session, I recommend staying hydrated, moisturizing regularly, avoiding anything that leaves marks on your skin, and getting a good night's sleep. I also recommend doing a little stretching. I joke with clients that I'm going to bend them like a pretzel, but there's some truth to it. Boudoir posing involves arching, reaching, pointing toes, and holding positions that can feel surprisingly athletic. A little stretching beforehand goes a long way.
On session day, simply bring your outfits and show up. Professional hair and makeup, posing guidance, expression coaching, and support throughout the entire experience are included. Most women who walk through my door have never done a boudoir session before, so everything is designed to be fully guided from start to finish.
5. Will there be a hairstylist and make-up artist?
Yes. Professional hair and makeup are included with every boudoir session at Nicole Griffin Photography.
Your session begins with hair and makeup, giving you time to settle in, relax, and ease into the experience before the camera ever comes out. You don't have to just walk into the studio and immediately strip off your clothes! The artists I work with have experience with a wide range of skin tones, hair textures, and beauty styles, whether you're looking for something soft and natural or a more glamorous look.
The goal isn't to make you look like someone else. It's to help you look like the most polished version of yourself. Many clients tell me the hair and makeup portion feels like the moment they finally stop rushing around taking care of everyone else and start focusing on themselves.
If you have specific preferences, inspiration photos, natural hair, curly, locs, extensions, or a stylist you already love, we'll discuss that during your planning consultation so everything feels authentic to you.
6. What do you do to make your customers feel comfortable for the shoot?
Most women arrive nervous, that's completely normal. In fact, I'd be more surprised if you weren't.
Comfort starts long before session day. Every client has a planning consultation with me where we talk through goals, wardrobe, concerns, boundaries, and what you're hoping to get out of the experience. Nothing is left to guesswork.
On session day, you're not expected to know how to pose, act, or suddenly become confident because a camera appeared, that's my job. Every pose is fully guided from head to toe, including where to place your hands, how to angle your body, where to look, and even what expression to make. I'll probably crack a few jokes along the way too.
The studio is private and appointment-only, with just one client scheduled per day. Professional hair and makeup give you time to settle in before we ever start shooting, and I always work within your comfort level. Whether you're wearing a bodysuit, an oversized sweater, a silk robe, or very little at all, you are in control of what you wear and what you choose to reveal.
One of my studio rules is simple: no negative self-talk. Most women spend enough time criticizing themselves before they walk through the door. My job is to create a space where, for a few hours, you get a break from that voice. By the end of the session, most clients tell me the thing they were worried about never actually happened.
7. Are pictures printed or do you provide a digital file?
Both! You'll select your images during a same-day reveal after your session, and from there you can choose digital images, printed artwork, or a combination of both. I'm slightly biased toward albums and wall art because I think your photos deserve better than spending the next ten years hiding in your phone camera roll. There's something special about holding a beautifully printed album in your hands. But I also understand we live in a digital world, so digital collections are available as well. Whether you want digitals, wall art, an album, or all of the above, we'll go over every option during your consultation and again at your reveal so you can choose what works best for you.
8. What happens on the day?
Most clients are surprised by how relaxed the day feels. Your session begins with arriving at my Baltimore studio and get settled into the chair for professional hair and makeup. That gives you time to get comfortable, and ease into the experience before the camera ever comes out. During this time, we'll go over your outfits, talk a bit more to get to know one another, answer any last-minute questions, and make sure everything is ready for your session.
On the day of your shoot, the only people present are you, me, and the hair and makeup artist. Before the camera comes out, the hair and makeup artist leaves and it is just us. The studio is private and appointment-only, so there are no waiting rooms, overlapping clients, or strangers walking through the space.
Once we start photographing, I'll guide you through everything. Most women who come to me have never done a boudoir session before, so you're not expected to know how to pose, where to put your hands, what expression to make, or how to angle your body. I'll walk you through each pose step-by-step and demonstrate what I'm looking for when needed. I like to say your session is like salsa, you can tell me how spicy we are going go, mild, medium, or spicy hot.
I joke with clients that I'm going to bend them like a pretzel, and there's a little truth to that. Boudoir posing often involves arching, stretching, pointing your toes, and holding positions. Don't worry though, I'll be right there coaching you through it all. Throughout the session, you'll have the opportunity to preview images on the back of the camera so you can see how everything is coming together. Most clients start the day a little nervous and end it wondering why they waited so long.
After the session, you'll take a break before we do the same-day image reveal, where you'll see your photographs for the first time and choose your favorite images and products.
9. Where will the photographs be used?
I built this studio on the belief that women should never have to trade privacy for beautiful photographs. By default, your images are kept completely private and will never be shared on social media, my website, marketing materials, competitions, publications, or anywhere else without your written permission.
Many of my clients are government employees, attorneys, healthcare professionals, executives, educators, and women in leadership positions who value discretion. Privacy isn't an add-on at Nicole Griffin Photography, it's the default.
If you choose to allow images to be shared, you'll complete a model release specifying exactly what can and cannot be used. Some clients allow everything, only anonymous images, or none at all. Every option is respected. Your photographs are purchased for your personal enjoyment and may be displayed in albums, wall art, digital collections, or other products you select during your reveal appointment. Whether those images stay entirely private or become part of my portfolio is always your decision. Images that are not purchased are deleted.
10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?
Because boudoir sessions require advance planning and the coordination of professional hair and makeup artists, session fees are non-refundable. If a client needs to reschedule, I ask for as much notice as possible so we can work together to find a new date. Rescheduling policies and any applicable fees are outlined in the booking agreement signed before the session.
Cancellations may be subject to a cancellation fee to help offset costs that have already been incurred for studio preparation, scheduling, and contracted hair and makeup services. I understand that emergencies and unexpected situations happen, and I always try to approach those conversations with fairness and flexibility whenever possible.
