10 Questions with Kristen Hammock

1. Introduction: What's your story?

Hi, I’m Kristen Hammock, founder and artist of K Hammock Photography in Durham, North Carolina.

I began my career photographing birth and motherhood. I was drawn to the threshold moments in a woman’s life, the spaces where strength and vulnerability meet. As a labor and delivery nurse, I witness women in their most powerful states every day. That perspective shaped everything about how I see. In the birth room, there is no performance. There is instinct, surrender, and an undeniable force. Photographing motherhood felt like a natural extension of that reverence.

My path shifted the first time a client asked me to photograph a boudoir session. During that experience, I felt the same current I feel at a birth. A woman standing at the edge of herself. A woman seeing her own power reflected back to her. I realized then that intimacy photography could be approached with the same depth and respect as birth work. It could honor a woman beyond her roles and responsibilities. It could allow her to witness herself fully.

Today, I create fine art boudoir and outdoor Goddess Sessions exclusively on medium format film. The process is slow and deliberate. Each frame is composed with intention. I work in private interiors and secluded natural landscapes at golden hour, curating every detail from wardrobe to florals to heirloom artwork. The experience is designed to feel elevated, discreet, and deeply personal.

My work is rooted in the female gaze. I photograph women as whole beings, holding sensuality, strength, softness, and authority at once. The final images are refined and timeless, created to live as tangible art in beautiful spaces for generations.

True luxury, to me, is being seen with care.

2. What is your experience shooting boudoir?

I have been specializing in boudoir photography since 2023, though my relationship with photography - and with film in particular - began much earlier. I earned my first degree in photography in 2007, where I was formally trained shooting on film. That foundation shaped the way I see light, skin, and composition. Film taught me patience. It taught me restraint. It taught me to slow down and truly look.

Before focusing exclusively on boudoir, I photographed birth and motherhood, experiences that deeply informed how I approach intimate portraiture. As a labor and delivery nurse, I witness women in moments of profound vulnerability and strength every day. That understanding of the female body - not as something to perfect, but as something powerful - naturally flows into my boudoir work.

Since 2023, my focus has been entirely on creating refined, film-based boudoir and outdoor Goddess Sessions for women who want something elevated and intentional. I approach each session with discretion, artistry, and a deep respect for the emotional experience of being seen. My work is rooted in the female gaze and captured exclusively on medium format film, resulting in timeless, tangible artwork that feels both luxurious and deeply personal.

Boudoir, for me, is not a trend. It is a continuation of a long relationship with film, with women, and with the sacred act of witnessing.

3. Where will the photo shoot take place?

The location of your photo shoot is something we decide together.

Most of my Goddess Sessions take place outdoors in intimate, off-the-beaten-path locations that I have spent years scouting and returning to. These are spaces chosen for their magic - the way light filters through trees, the movement of water, the softness of tall grass at golden hour. I know how each landscape holds light, and I schedule sessions carefully to ensure as much privacy and seclusion as possible. Discretion and safety are always prioritized.

Before we choose a setting, we have a deeper conversation about what lights you up. Are you drawn to water? Open fields? Forest shadows? Elegant architecture? The location should feel aligned with who you are and what you want to embody.

While nature is often my first love, I am equally open to photographing in a studio, a thoughtfully chosen rental property, a wedding venue, or your own home. Each space offers a different texture and energy. My role is to help you select an environment that feels luxurious, personal, and deeply supportive of your experience.

The setting is never random. It is intentional, curated, and chosen to hold you beautifully.

4. How should customers prepare for the Boudoir photo shoot?

Preparing for your boudoir or Goddess Session is part of the experience. It is not rushed, and it is never left to chance.

We begin with a one-on-one consultation where we talk honestly about what you’re craving. How you want to feel. What parts of yourself you’re ready to see. After that, you’ll receive a detailed and intimate questionnaire. It goes beyond sizing and logistics. It asks about your story, your relationship with your body, what lights you up, what makes you feel powerful. This is how I photograph you as a whole person, not just a body in front of a lens.

From there, I curate a custom mood board tailored specifically to you. It guides wardrobe, location, light, and energy. Nothing is generic. Everything is intentional.

The week of your session, you receive a detailed preparation guide with all the practical and sensory details. We talk about nourishing your body, hydrating, gentle movement, rest. I guide you on what to wear before arriving so there are no marks on your skin, how to approach hair and makeup, and what to bring, from meaningful jewelry to a robe, to a playlist that makes you feel alive. For outdoor sessions, I provide exact meeting details, parking instructions, and what shoes to bring for walking into our secluded location. I bring water, a speaker, blankets, Renaissance-style fabrics, and a few thoughtful extras to help you feel relaxed and cared for.

Most importantly, you prepare by allowing yourself to slow down. To treat the days leading up to your session as sacred. This is not about becoming someone new for the camera. It is about arriving as you are, supported, prepared, and fully seen.

By the time you step into your session, you won’t feel unsure. You’ll feel ready.

5. Will there be a hairstylist and make-up artist?

For Goddess Sessions, professional hair and makeup is not automatically included. The aesthetic of these sessions leans toward natural, wind-touched, sun-kissed beauty. I love skin that looks like skin and hair that moves freely in the light.

That said, if you would feel more confident having professional styling, I am always happy to arrange that for you. I work with a trusted hair and makeup artist who specializes in a soft glam look that complements my film-based work beautifully. Think elevated, polished, but still very much you.

If we add this service, it is scheduled thoughtfully into your session timeline so you feel relaxed and fully prepared before we begin. The goal is never to transform you into someone else. It is to enhance what is already there in a way that feels aligned, refined, and effortless.

6. What do you do to make your customers feel comfortable for the shoot?

By the time your session day arrives, we already know each other in a real way.

We’ve had our consultation. You’ve shared your story through the questionnaire. We’ve talked through your mood board, your hopes, your nerves, what excites you. You are not walking into a room with a stranger holding a camera. You’re stepping into a space with someone who already sees you.

I have a gift for guiding women through intimate spaces. My work as a labor and delivery nurse shaped that in me. I am deeply comfortable where vulnerability lives. I know how to hold steady, grounded energy. I know when to step back and give you full freedom to move and feel. And I know when to offer gentle, clear direction so you never feel unsure in your body.

Music is always part of the experience. There is never silence unless we want it. I love getting to know my clients through their playlists. The songs you choose tell me so much about you. We build a soundtrack that matches your energy, and once it starts playing, everything softens. Music helps you drop out of your head and into your body.

And I am a very enthusiastic cheerleader. I will absolutely squeal behind the camera. You will hear, “Oh my God, wow,” and “I cannot get over how beautiful you look,” because I genuinely mean it. I get excited when I see you step into yourself. That energy builds. It becomes contagious.

Comfort, for me, is about safety, rhythm, and encouragement. When you feel supported and celebrated, confidence rises naturally. And that is when the magic happens.

7. Are pictures printed or do you provide a digital file?

For Goddess Sessions, you receive both digital and tangible pieces of your experience.

All of your final images are delivered in a private online gallery as web-sized downloads, perfect for personal sharing and safekeeping. You’ll also receive a cinematic slideshow of your full gallery set to music, allowing you to experience your images as a story rather than just individual frames. It’s meant to be savored.

In addition to your digital files, you receive 10 Polaroid images presented in a handcrafted wooden keepsake box. These are one-of-a-kind pieces from your session, small physical relics of the day that you can hold in your hands.

If you would like to expand your collection, you have the option to add wall art or a leather-bound journal album. Your gallery also includes a customized store where you can order fine art prints and heirloom products directly. Everything is curated to feel timeless and worthy of being treasured for a lifetime.

8. What happens on the day?

If you’ve chosen to include professional hair and makeup, your day begins there. You’ll ease into the experience slowly, being cared for and styled in a way that still feels like you. If you’re not adding that service, we typically meet directly at our location and walk or hike in together. I love that part. It gives us a few quiet minutes to land, breathe, and transition into the space.

Once we get there, I’ll start getting my cameras ready. Shooting on film takes a minute to load, so there’s no rushing it. While I’m doing that, we’ve got music playing, maybe a glass of something fun in your hand, and we’re just easing into it. We’ll stretch a little, laugh, maybe dance around. It’s low pressure. The whole point is for you to feel comfortable, loose, and in your body before we really dive in.

When we start photographing, I guide the session according to the light. I am always watching how it moves through trees, across water, along your skin. That means we often shift and explore different parts of our location to catch those magical pockets of glow. It’s active, fluid, alive.

I offer gentle direction so you never feel unsure, but there is space for you to move naturally. We pause when I need to reload film, and those breaks become some of the sweetest parts of the day. We change fabrics, adjust wardrobe, weave flowers into your hair, add them to the landscape, or hold them as a bouquet. Sometimes we place florals behind you to soften the background. Sometimes they become part of your crown. We sip, we talk, we reset.

By the time we wrap up and hike back out, you usually feel different. Grounded. Lit up. A little wild and a little peaceful all at once.

The day unfolds slowly and intentionally. There is no rush. Only light, presence, and the quiet magic of being seen.

9. Where will the photographs be used?

Privacy is incredibly important to me, especially given the intimate nature of this work.

After your full gallery is revealed, you’ll receive a model release form that gives you control over how your images are shared. You decide what feels comfortable. If you prefer that no images be shared on social media, that is absolutely your choice.

I do reserve the right to use select images for my portfolio, or private marketing material, as this is how I share my work with future clients. That said, I am very mindful and intentional about what is shown. I take your comfort seriously and only share images with clear, explicit permission.

Nothing is ever posted casually. Your trust matters more than any photograph.

10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?

I understand that life happens.

Any amount you have paid that goes unused for any reason can be rolled over to a future session for up to one year from your original booking date. If we need to reschedule, we simply choose a new date that feels aligned and move forward from there.

Because I photograph a limited number of sessions each month and reserve that time specifically for you, payments are non-refundable. Your investment is never lost, but it must be used within that one-year window. Please note that if you reschedule into a new calendar year or season, current pricing at that time will apply, and any difference would need to be adjusted accordingly.

My goal is to protect both your investment and the integrity of my calendar while remaining flexible and human.
